Group Poem on Abolishing the Box!!!

Earlier this year, we workshopped with some amazing people from SUNY New Paltz on building an Abolish the Box campaign on their campus; we closed the workshop with a group poem that goes a little something like this:

ABOLISHING THE BOX

Looks like…

a truly diverse campus.. diversity with no box and more publicity for other social justice issues…

everybody being judged by the same criteria despite their past… more people of color! the “actual” NYC!…

like being liberated! like a beautiful table full of our favorite foods that never gets smaller!

like the whole world holding hands in peace and love.

I’ll be able to tell, with my eyes full of tears, tears of joy.

Sounds…

melodious, like mixed comments: more voices that can be heard;

sounds LOUD, with echoes throughout the country, like formerly incarcerated people in NY State breathing a sigh of relief…

like the sounds of people who toiled, celebrating, being able to know that their work and efforts are valuable…

like sweet jazz music playing the background, and protestors chanting Too Black, Too Brown, Too Strong!

like all our loved ones laughing with each other.

Feels like…

a less repressive and emotionally draining environment; feels different, friendly, inclusive…

like I go to a caring, just institution. It feels right. It feels accomplished.

It would be a different feeling. One that considers the value of others.

It would feel like more people are living.

It would feel like the first breath of air after leaving the womb, like an “I love you too.”

It would feel like the beginning.
